EFCC Grill Ex-Governor Chime, Nabs Ikeje Asogwa Of ESUBEB And Two Serving Commissioners In Enugu


As the former governor of Enugu Barrister Sullivan Iheanacho Chime face the probe of The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in connection with the $115m (N23bn) allegedly disbursed by a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, during the build-up to the 2015 presidential election, the anti-graft agency has also arrested Chief Ikeje Asogwa. one time state Chairman of the PDP alongside two serving commissioners in Enugu State in connection with the same Diezani case.
The two affected Commissioners were one time state PDP officials. Chief Charles Egumgbe, Commissioner for Water Resources, was an ex-chairman Peoples Democratic Party campaign office in the state while Rita Mba, Commissioner for Tourism, was the then party secretary.

In the same light, the chairman of the PDP in the state during the 2015 elections, Chief Ikeje Asogwa, who is currently the chairman of the board of Enugu State Universal Basic Education Board was also brought in by the EFCC over the same matter.

Mr. Johnson Babalola, the EFCC head, South-East zone on Wednesday disclosed that the trio – Egumgbe, Mba and Asogwa were held in custody, and later released on bail.

In his words: “They were detained, they made statements and they were later released on bail.” While affirming the EFCC is still investigating former Enugu governor, Sullivan Chime, who was accused to have received N450m out of the N23bn disbursed by Dieziani Alison-Madueke.

Chime had Hithertho on initial grill by the anti-graft agency over the campaign fund, reportedly disclosed to the opreatives that he surrendered the money to the secretary of the campaign office, Mba, who was also the state’s Commissioner for Special Duties and Inter-Government Affairs at the time.

The Ex-governor however maintained the money was brought by two of his former commissioners, Joe Nmamnel and Mba, in company with Asogwa and a PDP chieftain, Prof. Osita Ogbu.

Chime also revealed he left the money in the care of his orderly, whom he gave express orders that only Mba should have access to it to facilitate her work as secretary of the campaign office.
