My Challenges As A Medical Student - Vivian

Vivian

An Interview session with an ardent DBB reader, Ugwu Vivian Olaedo, A Medical Student At Esut Teaching Hospital Enugu where she mentioned some keypoints towards the revamping of the health sector in Nigeria among other things... Have an enjoyable read.

May we meet you?

Smiles...my name is Ugwu Uchechukwu Olaedo Vivian, a native of umunevo in Ogui nike,Enugu north L.G.A of Enugu State. Am the first issue in a noble and indigenous family of 5. Currently a 200lvl medical student in Enugu state university of science and tech. College of medicine (ESUCOM). Am 19years old.

What is your passion and aspirations in life?

hmmmm...well my aspirations in life are most importantly ...to make heaven , become a renowned gynaecologist and to have a lovely family of my own.

What are the challenges you face as a medical student?

As a medical student...i face so many challenges but to mention a few I'd say that the irregular curriculum of our course outlines is very tasking...for me o...i dunno if I'd be speaking the mind of my colleagues out there. An average medical student is required to have a basic knowledge on human anatomy, physiology, histology and biochemistry which has numerous and brain whacking topics under them. My problem now is the way these topics are taught..if they were taught sequentially under their different course outlines..i believe medicine wont be such a tasking course as it is seen to be ...to be more precise on my example..lemme say we were to have a lecture on the respiratory system,it should be taught sequentially under anatomy, physiology and histology...not today, they will teach it under anatomy..then tomorrow dey teach the circulatory system and the following day..they teach the same respiratory system under physiology again....ahn ahn!! It makes reading difficult and hard to assimilate. Those in my shoes will understand very well my situation sha

Then..another major problem is that of our dissection which has to do with the use of dead human bodies(cadavers) for practicals. In a situation whereby after a long time preservation of these bodies using formaldehyde(a chemical)..some still tend to rotten...so you could imagine the odour together with the already choking smell of the chemical...even our nose masks can't save us from the respiratory disaster..😁 well..its really a health hazard cos excessive inhalation of these odours especially that of the chemical can leave one susceptible to respiratory distress syndrome(RDS) and in severe cases..lung cancer my dear its only God that's our saviour o...i no fit shout...Laughs!!

And another thing is that i still don't understand the reason why medical students pay ridiculous amounts in universities across the country... I'll reserve my comment on that one o..but students are complaining bitterly

How do you rate medical facilities in Nigeria?

Hmmm....that's a strong one! Well...I'd rate it 50 °/• .Reason being that some hospitals in Nigeria are amazingly and adequately equipped while some are not...so it's not totally impossible to get proper medical attention in Nigeria.

What do you see medical tourism to be?

Well well well...to the best of my knowledge, medical tourism is the travel of people to a place other than where they normally reside for the sole purpose of obtaining medical treatment in that country.

If you were given the opportunity to advice the government on how to revamp the health sector in the country...what will it be?

If am not wrong at all..the health sector is made up of several professional groups all of which have the capacity to perform optimally when given a level playing field, the needed motivation, necessary tools and enabling environment ...therefore if given an opportunity to advice the government on how to revamp the health sector in Nigeria...I'll majorly advice on the trending issue in the country which is that of appointing two members of the same profession in a multi- disciplinary sector to prevail which is just unprecedented and totally absurd,

Secondly is to create health programmes most especially in the rural areas and also to provide adequate medical facilities to hospitals in most local governments especially those that are centrally located. The lack of these facilities are becoming crucial in the sense that in most emergency cases, individuals who would have been saved from intermittent death died due to the fact that the hospitals where they were being taken for treatment lacked the appropriate facilities and after they are being referred to another hospital...its just a race against time which in most cases...death is inevitable.
And also...they should move more medical practitioners to the rural areas because some of these medical issues are absurdly tropical in nature and are quick to spread among the rural inhabitants.

If you were given an opportunity to become the minister of health , what are the measures you will put in place to improve the health sector?

If given the opportunity to become the minister of health...without much ado...I'll take cognizance of the same advise I had given the government and actualize them...Nigeria's health sector will definitely improve. It just needs a boost from concerted effforts of selfless stakeholders in the health indusrty who will go about this vision with such a selfless drive as occassion of the moment demands.

What are your hobbies?

Smiles...i have a lot of hobbies o buh my main hobbies are cooking, travelling and practicing makeovers....the ladies will know better..Laughs!!

What is your best meal?

Plantain and egg sauce. My ride or die meal....hehehe😂...I like Dodo a lot.
