Tottenham midfielder ‘changes’ name to Dele

Image
Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Dele Alli will wear his first name on the back of his shirt this season, rather than his surname, his club announced on Saturday. “I wanted a name on my shirt that represented who I am and I feel I have no connection with the Alli surname,” the England international, 20, told the Tottenham website ahead of his side’s opening game at Everton. “This is not a decision I have taken without a lot of thought and discussion with family close to me.” Alli’s mother, Denise, revealed earlier this year that she gave her son away when he was 13 as she was battling alcoholism. He was raised by another couple, Alan and Sally Hickford. Alli scored 10 Premier League goals and provided nine assists last season, earning him the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Young Player of the Year award and a place in England’s Euro 2016 squad.

Sweden’s youngest ever minister resigns

Image
Sweden’s youngest ever cabinet minister, who came to the country as a refugee from Bosnia, announced her resignation on Saturday after being caught driving under the influence of alcohol. Aida Hadzialic, 29, minister for secondary and adult education, revealed that she had been stopped by police in the southern city of Malmo and tests showed she had an alcohol level of 0.2 grammes per litre of blood — just the level considered an offence in Sweden. “That was the biggest mistake of my life… I will take responsibility. I announce my intention to resign from my ministerial post,” an emotional Hadzialic told a press conference at government headquarters in Stockholm. “I understand that a lot of people are disappointed in me. And I am angry with myself, and certainly I deeply regret it,” added the young politician seen as the future of the Social Democrat party. Arsenal name ‘injured’ Mertesacker captain

Image
Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker has been named as the Premier League club’s new captain even though the injured German may not play again this year. Gunners boss Arsene Wenger defended the curious decision and said he will choose from a pool of experienced players to lead the side during Mertesacker’s prolonged absence. “Per is a very respected figure in the dressing room, is loved as well and is also a very demanding figure,” Wenger told Arsenal Player. “I think it is absolutely natural to be him. In his absence that’s where it will be taken by the assistants. “One of them will be Laurent Koscielny, also Santi Cazorla – the experienced players – Petr Cech maybe. “We will have a group of people that will take care of the energy levels and the problems of the team. That will be down a lot to the experienced players.” Arsenal needed to appoint a new captain following Mikel Arteta’s departure in the close-season. The Spaniard’s injury problems over the last two seasons h...

On the national stage, the Trump train hampered

Image
Donald Trump hasn’t quite asked the dead to vote for him, but he’s nearly there. “I joke a lot as I say if you’re sick, if you just got the worse prognosis that a doctor can give you, if you’re lying in bed and you just know you’re not going to make it — you have to get up on November 8th and you have to vote,” he said Thursday. At least nine times in the speech to evangelical leaders in key swing state Florida, the brash 70-year-old billionaire — sometimes speaking in an uncharacteristically low voice — called on them to ensure their parishioners cast their ballots for him. The Republican presidential candidate is a bit worried about his chances in November against Hillary Clinton, and he’s not exactly hiding it. And his team is struggling to transform his winning primary campaign model into an unbeatable national election machine. During the Republican primaries, the Manhattan real estate mogul and former reality television star ignored the experts and the pundits who told...

Mourinho, Guardiola launch Premier League title pursuit

Image
Boasting perhaps the most compelling cast of characters in its 24-year history, the Premier League resumes this weekend with the duel between Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho taking centre-stage. England’s elite have spent big in the hope of usurping champions Leicester City and nowhere will the battle be more intense than between Manchester City manager Guardiola and his Manchester United counterpart Mourinho. The former El Clasico rivals have each sanctioned outlays of around 150 million pounds ($194.9 million, 174.1 million euros) on new players, with United notably luring Paul Pogba back to Old Trafford and City capturing John Stones. City start the campaign as British bookmakers’ favourites, but despite United’s fifth-place finish in May, Mourinho declared on Friday: “We feel that we are candidates to win the title. “We know that not one or two or three more than that have the same ambitions. We cannot speak differently. We want to fight for the title. “If at the end of ...

No fraud case against #SaveMayowa - Police

Image
The Lagos State Police command says it has investigated the controversy surrounding the funding and medical treatment of Mayowa Ahmed and has not been able to establish any case of fraud against Ahmed or members of her family. The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Dolapo Badmos, said this in a statement on Friday. It would be recalled that the victim’s family, supported by Nollywood actress, Toyin Aimakhu; and Miss Aramide Kasumu, the director of Lifestake Foundation, had launched an online appeal to raise funds for her cancer surgery in an Atlanta- based hospital in the United States. The campaign was said to have raised over N80m and a separate $100,000 for her but Aimakhu later alleged on social media that the campaign was a scam. The police spokesperson, however, described the controversy as a mere misunderstanding between the parties involved. The statement read in part, “On July 28 the Ahmed family wanted to take Mayowa out of the hospital and Both Toyin and Aramide de...

Bayern, Dortmund in Super Cup face-off

Image
Borussia Dortmund host champions Bayern Munich for the German Super Cup on Sunday with Mats Hummels and Mario Goetze set to be scrutinised following high-profile returns to each rival team. The showdown between German league and cup champions Bayern and last season’s runners-up Dortmund, who finished second to the Bavarians in both competitions, has plenty of added spice a fortnight before the start of the Bundesliga season. Germany centre-back Hummels, Dortmund’s captain last season, can expect an uncomfortable return to Borussia’s sold-out Signal Iduna Park having signed a five-year deal in May to rejoin Bayern, the club he left in 2008. “There will certainly be some people who won’t give me a warm welcome,” admits Hummels. “It’s understandable, but I will always cherish my time there, even if I am booed there for the next 15 times in a row.” Hummels expects “very loud background noise” and failed to help matters by admitting he moved to Bayern to join “one of the three best teams in...

In the pictures one officer can be seen lying on a seat extended flat while the other has his head tilted.
