Sam Allardyce had plenty of insight on his captain on Wednesday night as he sat between two men who know Wayne Rooney as well as anyone.

The new England boss was sandwiched between Sir Alex Ferguson and hisSunderland successor David Moyes at Old Trafford as the trio, with well over 40 years of Premier League experience, took in Manchester United 's goalless draw withEverton .

Moyes gave Rooney his debut at Everton in September 2002 when the striker burst onto the scene as a 16-year-old before Sir Alex plucked him from Goodison to turn him into one of the world's best players and a Champions League and Premier League winner.

There was plenty of English talent on display for Allardyce to feast his eyes on in Manchester, with Marcus Rashford, John Stones, Leighton Baines, Luke Shaw, Ross Barkley and Aaron Lennon among those in action.

But the game was far from memorable as neither side managed to break the deadlock in United's final pre-season friendly before Sunday's community shield clash with Leicester at Wembley.

Allardyce was announced as Roy Hodson's replacement last month leaving a birth for Moyes to make his Premier League return after his La Liga experiment ended in sacking by Real Sociedad in November.

The Scot, who took over from Sir Alex at Old Trafford but endured a reign to forget, will have a tough act to follow at the Stadium of Light after Allardyce led the Black Cats to unlikely Premier League survival last season.

Rooney's testimonial, which raised funds for the striker's new foundation, comes after 12 seasons at the club in which he has won 10 major trophies.
