Three Nigerians create Records in the Rio Olympics



Three Nigerian athletes have created records of sorts that will be cherished in a longtime in the ongoing Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games.

The trio with records are two table tennis stars, Segun Toriola and Aruna Quadri as well as Rower, Chierika Ukogu .The 41 year-old Toriola had his 7th appearance in the current Games, equaling the table tennis record. This has made him the most capped African Olympian.

Nigeria’s Aruna Quadri set another continental record after the 2014 ITTF star became the first African to reach the quarterfinals of men’s singles event at Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Ukogu on the other hand, qualified for top classification in the rowing event in Rio.

She is Nigeria’s first ever rower in the Olympics to have got that far, placing fifth in the third quarter final of the Women’s single sculls after clocking a time of 7:54.44 secs.

She will now participate in the semi finals C/D 1 event on Wednesday. This is the 23-year-old’s first ever appearance in the Olympics.

PDP, Ize-Iyamu jealous of my credentials – Obaseki

The candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the forthcoming governorship election in Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, dismissed allegation by the Peoples Democratic Party that he received millions of naira as salaries as the head of the state’s economy and strategy team. The PDP state Chairman, Chief Dan Orbih, had during the party’s rally in Orhionmwon on Monday accused Obaseki of allegedly deceiving the citizens with claims that he (Obaseki) worked without any remuneration under the state government. Orbih had also displayed documents, which he claimed were vouchers for payments allegedly made to the APC candidate. But Obaseki, in a statement by the Director-General (Media and Publicity) of his campaign organisation, Abass Braimah, on Wednesday described the allegations as “tissues of lies”, adding that both the PDP and its candidate were “jealous” of his credentials and selfless service to the state. Lagos reiterates zero tolerance for criminal activities

The Lagos State Government has reassured residents, especially those in the troubled communities of its ability to combat crimes in all parts of the state. The state government said it still maintained its zero tolerance for criminal acts, while urging residents to remain calm as the Rapid Response Squad of the police in the state was on top of the current security challenges being faced by the locals. They urged residents to always volunteer vital information to security agencies to enable them to promptly discharge their responsibilities. “Information gathering is an integral part of security in the environment,” the state government said.
